Before beginning their language training at Discovery Learning Center, students take a placement test.
a) Written test (computer-based or paper-based): assesses listening, reading, language use (grammar and vocabulary), and writing.
b) Optional oral component (1:1 interview format): includes open-ended questions related to level-specific learning outcomes and may be administered to confirm the ability level indicated by the written assessment.
The written placement test consists of seventy (70) questions covering listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. In addition, students are required to complete a placement essay.
If further evaluation is needed—for example, when there is a noticeable difference between a student's perceived fluency and the written test results—an oral interview may be administered.
Based on the placement results, students are assigned to the level that best matches their current proficiency. During the first week of classes, instructors monitor each student’s performance to ensure that the assigned level provides an appropriate learning environment. If a student finds that the assigned level is either too easy or too challenging, the student may request a level change during the first week.
